What a fantastic Friday evening in San Marcos! I had a great time performing with my friends Ian Lee (guitar) and Chris Wallis (drums) for a very appreciative crowd. We made a few new fans and sold a few CDs through the corse of the night. Ian was on fire as he ripped solo after solo during the night, and Chris was Mr. Timekeeper with his great funky flavor. The crowd came up and videoed us several times, and we even had a gentleman sing a couple of Elvis tunes with us. Fun night indeed!!!

It was serious business in New Braunfels, TX with Chris Wallis tonight. We played for so many people, I didn't have time to smile in this photo. Ha! We had a diverse clientele, all of whom had their favorites they wanted us to perform, so we did. Everything from Coldplay to Zac Brown Band was requested, and Chris kept the beats coming. Read his blog to find out what he thinks of Michael Jackson...

Roger Glenn played drums while I played piano for the peeps in Marble Falls, TX tonight. I had a good time helping a newly engaged couple come up with a wedding song, and performing the requests the peeps were coming up with. The real fun began on my way home. It rained last night, so besides all the bats and skunks I saw through patches of fog, I saw more frogs on my drive home than the total number of frogs I've seen in my lifetime. In the street, hopping around, frogs. Every few feet, little ones, big ones, alive ones and *croaked* ones. Kinda put me in the Halloween spirit; bats and skunks and frogs in the fog.

My second show of the night took place in Marble Falls, TX with the great Joe Resnick on drums. The evening started off strong, with lots of requests and generous people doing the requesting. My favorite tonight was "The Beach Boys - Little Red Corvette". Then, during our second set, an inebriated individual at the back of the room reached into the sound booth and made the P.A. feedback severely, which made us temporarily halt the show. We found and fixed the problem, and we got the show back on track. After a few more requests, we ended the night strong with a Stevie Wonder tune!!!

Tonight in Marble Falls, Texas, Joe Resnick and I entertained the crowd once again! For the first three hours of the show, the requests were mostly upbeat, very rocking tunes. Joe and I obliged, and kept the crowd on their feet! By the time the fourth hour rolled around, I think the crowd was tired and a bit inebriated, because all of our requests were slow songs. Thanks to everyone who came out to AJ's tonight!

This group sure was energetic but I have no recollection of what style they were performing. I am graceless and clumsy. I can't dance to save my life so I don't know much about the art. Plus I lost the program book. And the dog ate my homework. Cut me some slack.

Well, that's the only other song about this town I can think of besides the one I mentioned yesterday. But it's true!
I like KC. Some people say it's the eastern-most Western city in the U.S. And it's kind of an outpost - the next stop west is Denver, and that's a long way.  It's got a progressive, modern feel. We had dinner at Julian, which was highly rated online. We were not disappointed. The food was built of simple elements, perfect local ingredients and creativity, served by warm, knowledgeable people.
Got some good sunset pix from and around the Westin Hotel in Crown Center. Like St. Louis, this is flyover country. Some of those travelers should touch down and have a look.
And speaking of St. Louis, the Cardinals won the bottommost step of the baseball playoffs yesterday, beating the Atlanta Braves on their home field. Now we get into the real competition, playing the Washington Nationals at home Sunday and Monday. Mrs. C and I won't be home in time for the first game but I'll be at the following match, lenses blazing. Only 11 more victories until our home town heroes win their second straight championship.

A few last images from Kansas City. This is the Kauffman Center For The Performing Arts, a remarkable piece of architecture. It is the home of the Kansas City Symphony, Lyric Opera and Ballet. The building contains a theater and a large concert hall, presenting a variety of musical acts and stage shows.
It was nearly empty when I stopped by last Saturday but the lobby was open. Views from different perspectives don't quite look like the same building.
Arch photo tomorrow, then a day or two of something local. On Sunday maybe a pic from beautiful Dallas - Ft. Worth International Airport, where we change planes Saturday. Then we got a problem. We will be in the black zone, really out in the wilderness for a few days.

The Arch is covered by floodlights from sunset to midnight. For one night a year, Macy's turns the lights pink as part of breast cancer awareness month. Last Thursday, October 4, was this year's event. It's magical. I was surprised that there weren't hoards of shooters out there with their tripods but I saw no one else. A lot of people walking up 4th Street to the Rams football game were taking pictures with their phones, but that hardly counts.
Those are the lights of an airplane moving within the curve in the top photo, an 8 second exposure.

Dancing In The Street 2
The Lou has seen a growing number of outdoor festivals, events and fairs in the last several years, happily coinciding with the existence of STL DPB. Dancing In The Street had its seventh edition on Saturday, up and down Grand Boulevard from Lindell to Delmar in the Grand Center arts and entertainment district.
There were three stages going with all kinds of dance forms, plus some actually on the street, as we shall see shortly. The women in the top picture were clog dancers, which, um, I'd rather you didn't ask me to define. (I'm as graceful on my feet as a rhino.) The announcer said the act had a Country & Western slant, but blue jeans are blue jeans to me.
The ladies in in the second picture were doing a step dancing routine, another genre you would learn more about elsewhere. The woman in front is wearing the colors of my alma mater, located just a couple of blocks down the street.

Dancing In The Street 7
There were adults, teens and children performing hip-hop dance routines in the middle of Grand Boulevard at Dancing In The Streets. This group of kids started out writhing on the floor, like they were beginning a performance of The Rite of Spring. But no, the beat blew up into something very unlike Stravinsky as the dancers lept into the air. I like the top pic because the girl on the right looks like she has a tongue of fire over her head, as in some Catholic representations of Jesus and saints. Different philosophy at work here.

Last Friday, the orange of Cesar Chavez and the purple of Maple Lawn united on the winter-browned field of Cesar Chavez Learning Center.  The goal nets billowed in the wind, the on-lookers shielded their eyes from the February sun, and the kids happily chased the flying soccer ball.  As the first game day of 2011, Friday saw an overwhelming turn out of parents, teachers, and other students on the side lines cheering on their teams.  Even the Cesar Chavez Thunderbirds cheerleaders were out jumping, flipping, and cheering.
The two games were a great start to a spring full of soccer games and fun.  Stay posted for more updates on the upcoming games and events!
